Indications:
Indicated for the treatment of respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, and skin infections in children caused by susceptible bacteria.
Pharmacology:
Ofloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential for bacterial replication and repair, leading to cell death.
Dosage:
The usual pediatric dose is 7.5–15 mg/kg/day in two divided doses. Dose and duration depend on the severity and type of infection and must be determined by a physician.
Administration:
Shake the bottle well before each use. Administer orally using the provided measuring device. Can be given with or without food.
Interaction:
Avoid concomitant use with antacids, iron, zinc, and other drugs that may interfere with absorption. Use caution with drugs prolonging the QT interval.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in children with a known hypersensitivity to fluoroquinolones, epilepsy, or a history of tendon disorders related to quinolones.
Side Effects:
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, rash. Rarely, tendon rupture or hypersensitivity reactions may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Not applicable for direct use in pregnancy or lactation; however, use in children under appropriate supervision is considered safe if prescribed.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor for signs of hypersensitivity and behavioral changes. Ensure proper hydration in children. Not recommended in children below 1 year without medical advice.
