Indications:
Indicated for hypercholesterolemia, mixed dyslipidemia, and prevention of cardiovascular events in patients at risk.
Pharmacology:
Atorvastatin is a selective HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor that reduces LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing HDL-cholesterol. It inhibits the enzyme responsible for cholesterol production in the liver.
Dosage:
Initial dose is usually 10 mg once daily. The dose may be adjusted at intervals of at least 4 weeks up to a maximum of 80 mg per day, based on patient response.
Administration:
Administer orally once daily, with or without food, preferably in the evening.
Interaction:
May interact with cyclosporine, certain antibiotics (like clarithromycin), antifungals, and grapefruit juice. Risk of myopathy increases with concomitant use of fibrates or niacin.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Atorvastatin, active liver disease, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include muscle pain, diarrhea, joint pain, and elevated liver enzymes. Rarely, may cause rhabdomyolysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation due to potential harm to the fetus or nursing infant.
Precautions & Warnings:
Liver function tests should be performed before and during treatment. Caution in patients with a history of liver disease or heavy alcohol use.
