Indications:
Treatment of hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. Prevention of cardiovascular events in patients with high cholesterol levels.
Pharmacology:
Atorvastatin inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, reducing cholesterol synthesis in the liver and lowering LDL and total cholesterol levels.
Dosage:
20 mg orally once daily, with or without food. Dose adjustment may be required based on response.
Administration:
Take orally once daily, preferably at the same time each day. Can be taken with or without meals.
Interaction:
Interactions with certain antibiotics, antifungals, cyclosporine, and grapefruit juice. Use caution with other cholesterol-lowering agents.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to atorvastatin, active liver disease, pregnancy, and lactation.
Side Effects:
Common side effects: headache, muscle pain, nausea. Rare but serious: myopathy, liver enzyme elevation, rhabdomyolysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to risk to fetus and infant.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor liver function and muscle symptoms during therapy. Report unexplained muscle pain or weakness immediately.
