Avil (Promethazine) is a first-generation antihistamine that works by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance produced by the body during allergic reactions. By preventing histamine from binding to its receptors, Avil helps reduce common allergy symptoms such as itching, swelling, and redness. Additionally, it has antiemetic (nausea-reducing) and sedative properties, making it useful for treating motion sickness and nausea.
The recommended dose for adults is generally 25 mg to 50 mg, taken 30 minutes before traveling if used for motion sickness.
For allergy relief, the typical dose is 25 mg to 50 mg, taken one to two times daily, as prescribed by a doctor.
It is advised to take Avil with food or after meals to reduce any stomach irritation.
Do not exceed the recommended dose without consulting your healthcare provider.
Always follow the prescribed dosage and consult a doctor for individual recommendations.
Increased Effect: Avil may interact with other central nervous system depressants (e.g., alcohol, tranquilizers, sedatives) to increase sedation and drowsiness.
Decreased Effect: Medications that increase the metabolic rate (e.g., certain anticonvulsants) may reduce Avil’s effectiveness.
Always inform your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs.
Hypersensitivity to promethazine or any component of the medication
