Avil (Promethazine) is a first-generation antihistamine that works by blocking the effects of histamine, a natural substance produced in the body during allergic reactions. By inhibiting histamine’s action on its receptors, Avil reduces common allergy symptoms like itching, swelling, and runny nose. Additionally, Avil has antiemetic (nausea-reducing) and sedative properties, making it useful for motion sickness, nausea, and sleep disturbances.
The typical adult dose for allergy symptoms is 25 mg to 50 mg, taken 1-2 times daily, depending on the severity of symptoms.
For motion sickness, take 25 mg to 50 mg 30 minutes to 1 hour before travel.
For sleep disturbances, 25 mg to 50 mg can be taken at bedtime.
It is advised to take Avil with food or after meals to minimize stomach irritation.
Always follow the prescribed dosage and consult a doctor for individual recommendations.
Increased Effect: Avil may enhance the sedative effects when used in combination with alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other central nervous system depressants.
Decreased Effect: The effectiveness of Avil may be reduced by certain anticonvulsant medications and drugs that increase liver enzyme activity.
Always inform your healthcare provider of any other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs.
