Pharmacology:
Lasix contains furosemide, a loop diuretic that works by inhibiting sodium and chloride reabsorption in the kidneys, promoting the excretion of water, sodium, chloride, and potassium.
It effectively helps reduce fluid retention and lowers blood pressure by increasing urine production.
Dosage:
The usual adult dose for edema is 20-80mg per day, depending on the severity of the condition, and it can be adjusted based on the patient's response.
For hypertension, the dose is typically 20-40mg per day, often used in combination with other antihypertensive drugs.
Always follow the dosage prescribed by your healthcare provider.
Administration:
Lasix 20mg tablets should be taken orally, usually once or twice daily.
It is recommended to take the medication in the morning to avoid frequent urination at night.
It can be taken with or without food.
Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication to avoid dehydration.
Interaction:
Lasix may interact with other medications, including antihypertensive drugs, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), lithium, and certain antibiotics.
Potassium-sparing diuretics and supplements containing potassium should be used cautiously.
Always inform your doctor of all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.
Contraindications:
Lasix should not be used in individuals with an allergy to furosemide or any other components of the medication.
It is contraindicated in patients with anuria (lack of urine production) and severe electrolyte imbalance.
Caution is required in patients with liver disease, kidney disease, or gout.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include dizziness, lightheadedness, dehydration, and increased urination.
Serious side effects can include low potassium levels (hypokalemia), low blood pressure (hypotension), and electrolyte imbalances.
Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience severe side effects such as muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, or confusion.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Lasix should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed, as it is classified as a Category C drug for pregnancy. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Furosemide is excreted in breast milk, so consult your doctor before using Lasix while breastfeeding.
