SPERDAL 4 MG is used for the treatment of:

Schizophrenia: A mental disorder that affects thoughts, feelings, and behavior.

Bipolar disorder: A mood disorder characterized by extreme mood swings, from manic episodes to depressive lows.

Irritability in autism: Helps manage irritability, aggression, and mood swings associated with autism spectrum disorder.
SPERDAL 4 MG works by regulating the activity of certain neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin, in the brain, which helps improve mood, thoughts, and behavior. This medication is particularly effective in managing psychotic symptoms and controlling the mood swings commonly seen in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Pharmacology:
SPERDAL 4 MG contains Risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic. Risperidone works by blocking dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain, which plays a significant role in regulating mood and behavior. By regulating these neurotransmitters, it helps reduce psychotic symptoms like delusions, hallucinations, and mood instability, providing effective control of mental health conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Dosage:

Schizophrenia: The usual starting dose is 1 mg daily, which can be gradually increased by the doctor, with a typical dose range between 4 mg to 6 mg per day.

Bipolar disorder: The initial dose is typically 2 mg per day, which may be adjusted depending on the patient's response.

Autism irritability: The usual starting dose is 0.25 mg per day, and the dosage can be adjusted based on the severity of the symptoms and the patient’s age.

Administration:

Take SPERDAL 4 MG orally with or without food.

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.

Do not crush or chew the tablet.

Take at the same time each day for consistent effects.
Interaction:

CNS depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives): May increase the sedative effects and cause excessive drowsiness.

Antihypertensive drugs: SPERDAL can lower blood pressure, so it may intensify the effect of blood pressure-lowering medications.

Antidepressants and mood stabilizers: May increase the risk of side effects such as dizziness or sedation when taken together with SPERDAL.
Always inform your doctor about any other medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, you are currently using.
Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to Risperidone or any of its components.

Severe liver or kidney disease: This medication should be used with caution, and dose adjustments may be necessary.

Pregnancy: SPERDAL 4 MG should only be used during pregnancy if necessary, and the benefits outweigh the risks. It is categorized as Pregnancy Category C.

Lactation: Risperidone passes into breast milk. It is advised to consult a doctor before taking this medication while breastfeeding.
