Fimoxyclav 100 ml is commonly used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and infections caused by susceptible bacteria. The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid makes it effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Pharmacology:
Fimoxyclav contains two active ingredients:

  1. Amoxicillin: A broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the penicillin class, which works by inhibiting the bacterial cell wall synthesis, thus preventing bacterial growth.

  2. Clavulanic Acid: A beta-lactamase inhibitor that prevents certain bacteria from breaking down amoxicillin, thus extending its antibacterial activity and making it effective against resistant bacterial strains.

Dosage:

  • Adults and Children (over 12 years): The usual dose is 500 mg of amoxicillin (equivalent to 5 ml of the suspension) every 12 hours. The doctor may adjust the dosage based on the severity of the infection.

  • Children (under 12 years): The dose depends on the child’s weight and the type of infection. Typically, the dose is around 20–40 mg/kg body weight per day, divided into two doses.

Administration:

  • Shake the bottle well before use.

  • Fimoxyclav 100 ml should be taken orally. It can be taken with or without food. To ensure the correct dosage, use the measuring device provided with the suspension.

  • The dose may be divided into two equal doses to be taken 12 hours apart.

Interaction:

  • Fimoxyclav may interact with other antibiotics, blood thinners (e.g., warfarin), and oral contraceptives.

  • It may also interact with medications that affect liver enzymes or alter gut flora. Always inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking.

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, or other penicillin antibiotics.

  • Patients with a history of severe liver problems or jaundice associated with the use of penicillin-class antibiotics.

  • Not recommended for patients with a history of severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to penicillins.

Side Effects:

  • Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting.

  • Rare but serious side effects include allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing), liver dysfunction, or blood disorders (e.g., low blood cell counts).

  • Prolonged use may lead to secondary infections like yeast infections.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • Fimoxyclav is generally considered safe during pregnancy but should be used only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Consult your doctor before use.

  • Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid are excreted in breast milk, but in small amounts. It is generally considered safe for breastfeeding mothers but should only be used under medical supervision.

Therapeutic Class:

  • Antibiotics, Penicillins with Beta-lactamase Inhibitors

Storage Conditions:

  • Store Fimoxyclav 100 ml at room temperature (below 25°C), away from direct light and moisture.

  • Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of the reach of children.

  • Once opened, the suspension should be used within 7 days.
