Pharmacology:
Lasix contains furosemide, a loop diuretic that inhibits sodium and chloride reabsorption in the kidneys, promoting the excretion of water, sodium, chloride, and potassium.
It helps lower blood pressure and manage fluid retention by increasing urine production and reducing excess fluid buildup in the body.
Dosage:
The usual dose for edema in adults is 20-80mg per day, which can be adjusted based on the severity of the condition and the patient's response.
For hypertension, the typical starting dose is 40mg once or twice a day, which may be combined with other antihypertensive drugs.
Always follow the prescribed dosage by your healthcare provider.
Administration:
Lasix 40mg tablets should be taken orally, usually once or twice a day.
It is recommended to take the medication in the morning to avoid frequent urination at night.
You may take Lasix with or without food.
Ensure you drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated while using this medication.
Interaction:
Lasix may interact with other medications, including certain antihypertensive drugs, diuretics, and medications that affect potassium levels.
Potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics should be used cautiously, as they may lead to electrolyte imbalances.
Always inform your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs.
Contraindications:
Lasix should not be used in patients with known allergies to furosemide or any of its components.
It is contraindicated in patients with anuria (lack of urine production) or severe electrolyte imbalances.
Caution is needed in patients with liver disease, kidney disease, or gout.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include dizziness, lightheadedness, dehydration, increased urination, and electrolyte disturbances.
Serious side effects may include low potassium (hypokalemia), low blood pressure (hypotension), or severe allergic reactions.
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, or confusion.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Lasix should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus (Pregnancy Category C). Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy.
Furosemide is excreted in breast milk, so consult your healthcare provider before using Lasix while breastfeeding.
Therapeutic Class:
Diuretic (Loop Diuretic)
