Description

Epilim 300 mg is primarily prescribed for the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder. It helps in controlling seizures in patients with epilepsy and stabilizes mood in those suffering from bipolar disorder.

Pharmacology:
Epilim 300 mg contains valproate, which works by increasing the amount of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA helps calm overactive nerve activity, thus reducing the frequency of seizures in epilepsy and stabilizing mood swings in bipolar disorder.

Dosage:

  • Adults: The typical starting dose for epilepsy is 10-15 mg/kg per day, and the dose can be gradually increased.

  • Children: Dosage is determined based on the child's weight and condition, typically around 15 mg/kg per day, with adjustments as needed.

  • Bipolar Disorder: Initial doses are usually between 400-500 mg per day and can be adjusted based on clinical response.

Administration:
Epilim 300 mg should be taken orally, with or after meals to reduce the risk of stomach irritation. The dose may be divided into two or three daily doses, as directed by the doctor.

Interaction:

  • Epilim can interact with other medications, particularly other anticonvulsants, anticoagulants, and antidepressants. It is essential to inform your doctor of all medications you're taking to avoid potential drug interactions.

  • Alcohol can enhance the sedative effects of Epilim, so it should be avoided.

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to valproate or any other ingredients in Epilim.

  • Contraindicated in patients with liver disease or a history of liver disorders, particularly in children under 3 years old.

  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy unless the potential benefit to the mother outweighs the risk to the fetus.

Side Effects:

  • Common side effects may include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, tremors, and weight gain.

  • Serious side effects include liver problems, pancreatitis, blood disorders, and mood changes.

  • If you experience severe side effects, such as yellowing of the skin/eyes or unusual tiredness, seek immediate medical attention.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • Epilim should not be used during pregnancy unless necessary, as it can cause birth defects. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, consult your doctor.

  • Valproate is excreted in breast milk. Breastfeeding while taking Epilim should only be done if advised by a healthcare provider.
