Pharmacology:
Metsa contains Metronidazole, a nitroimidazole-class antimicrobial agent.
It is selectively toxic to anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. Metronidazole enters microbial cells, where it is reduced to active metabolites that disrupt DNA and inhibit nucleic acid synthesis, leading to cell death.
Dosage:
The standard adult dose is 500 mg orally every 8 hours, depending on the type and severity of the infection.
Course duration is typically 5–10 days but may vary by infection site.
Dose should be adjusted in patients with hepatic impairment or renal dysfunction.
Administration:
Take orally with or without food.
Swallow whole with a full glass of water.
Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve earlier.
Interaction:
Alcohol must be strictly avoided during and for 48 hours after treatment due to the risk of a disulfiram-like reaction (nausea, vomiting, cramps).
May interact with:
Warfarin (increased bleeding risk)
Lithium (increased toxicity)
Cimetidine (may increase metronidazole levels)
Enzyme-inducing drugs like phenobarbital or phenytoin (may reduce effectiveness)
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazoles
First trimester of pregnancy in certain indications (especially for trichomoniasis)
Caution in patients with neurological disorders or liver disease
Side Effects:
Common: Nausea, metallic taste, headache, dizziness, dry mouth
Less common: Dark urine, rash, diarrhea
Serious (rare): Seizures, peripheral neuropathy, allergic reactions
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: Category B; use with caution, especially during the first trimester unless clearly needed.
Lactation: Metronidazole passes into breast milk. If needed, consult a physician—may recommend temporary discontinuation of breastfeeding.
Therapeutic Class:
Nitroimidazole Antibacterial / Antiprotozoal
Storage Conditions:
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C
Protect from light and moisture
Keep out of the reach of children
Do not use after expiry date
