Pharmacology:
Contains Metronidazole, a nitroimidazole-class antimicrobial agent with potent activity against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa.
In extended-release form, it maintains a stable blood concentration, ensuring longer action and better compliance.
Works by producing toxic metabolites that interfere with DNA synthesis in anaerobic organisms, causing microbial cell death.
Dosage:
Usual adult dose: 750 mg once or twice daily, as directed by the physician.
Course duration depends on the infection type, typically 5–10 days.
Dose adjustment may be required in renal or hepatic impairment.
Administration:
Take orally with a full glass of water.
Preferably taken with food to reduce stomach upset.
Do not crush or chew the tablet to preserve extended-release properties.
Interaction:
Avoid alcohol during and 48 hours after taking this medicine to prevent disulfiram-like reactions (nausea, flushing, cramps).
Possible interactions include:
Warfarin – increased bleeding risk
Lithium – potential toxicity
Cimetidine – may raise metronidazole levels
Phenytoin, Phenobarbital – may reduce efficacy
Contraindications:
Known hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives
CNS diseases like epilepsy or a history of seizures
Severe hepatic impairment
