Description

ORACYN K 250 is indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections. These include respiratory tract infections (such as pneumonia, bronchitis), skin infections (like cellulitis, impetigo), and urinary tract infections (UTIs). It is also used for other infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

Pharmacology:

ORACYN K 250 contains Ciprofloxacin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class. Ciprofloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase, an enzyme essential for DNA replication. This inhibition prevents bacteria from multiplying and spreading, thereby treating the infection. It is effective against a wide variety of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Dosage:

  • The usual dosage for adults is 250 mg to 500 mg, taken twice daily, depending on the severity and type of infection.

  • For urinary tract infections, a typical dose is 250 mg twice daily for 3-7 days.

  • For respiratory or skin infections, the dose may be adjusted based on the specific condition and the doctor's recommendations.

  • Always follow the doctor’s instructions regarding dosage.

Administration:

  • ORACYN K 250 is taken orally, preferably with a full glass of water.

  • It can be taken with or without food.

  • Avoid taking the medication with dairy products or calcium-fortified juices, as they can interfere with absorption.

  • It is important to complete the full course of therapy, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the infection from returning.

Interaction:

ORACYN K 250 may interact with certain medications, including:

  • Antacids containing magnesium, aluminum, or calcium, which can reduce the absorption of Ciprofloxacin.

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which may increase the risk of seizures.

  • Warfarin (a blood thinner), which may increase the risk of bleeding.
Always inform your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.

Contraindications:

ORACYN K 250 is contraindicated in individuals who:

  • Are allergic to Ciprofloxacin or any other fluoroquinolone antibiotics.

  • Have a history of tendon problems or tendonitis related to the use of fluoroquinolones.

  • Have severe liver or kidney dysfunction, unless advised by a doctor.

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include:

  • Nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, and headache.

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort.
    Serious side effects may include:

  • Tendon rupture or inflammation (particularly in the Achilles tendon).

  • Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeats.

  • Seizures or mental health side effects (such as confusion or hallucinations).
If any of these serious side effects occur, seek immediate medical attention.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

Pregnancy: ORACYN K 250 should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary and prescribed by a healthcare provider. It is classified as a Category C drug during pregnancy, meaning animal studies have shown potential risks to the fetus, but there is insufficient data from human studies.
Lactation: Ciprofloxacin is excreted in breast milk. It is generally not recommended for use during breastfeeding due to potential adverse effects on the infant. Consult your doctor before using this medication while breastfeeding.
