Fimoxyclav 375 mg is used for the treatment of various bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and other bacterial infections. The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid enhances the antibiotic activity and broadens the spectrum of antibacterial activity.
Pharmacology:
Fimoxyclav 375 mg contains:
Amoxicillin: A broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, which ultimately leads to bacterial cell death.
Clavulanic Acid: A beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects amoxicillin from degradation by bacterial enzymes called beta-lactamases. This combination makes Fimoxyclav effective against bacteria that would normally be resistant to amoxicillin alone.
Dosage:
Adults and Children (over 12 years): The usual dose is 375 mg (equivalent to 1 tablet) every 12 hours. The dosage may be adjusted by the doctor depending on the severity of the infection.
Children (under 12 years): The dosage depends on the child’s weight and the severity of the infection. It is generally calculated as 20–40 mg/kg body weight per day, divided into two doses.
Administration:
Fimoxyclav 375 mg is taken orally with or without food.
The tablet should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush or chew the tablet.
For best results, take the medication at the same time every day to maintain consistent levels in the bloodstream.
Interaction:
Fimoxyclav 375 mg may interact with other antibiotics, anticoagulants (like warfarin), and other medications used to treat infections.
Inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking, especially if you are using birth control pills, blood thinners, or other antibiotics.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, or other penicillin-class antibiotics.
Use with caution in individuals with a history of liver disease or jaundice caused by antibiotics.
Not recommended for patients with a history of severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to beta-lactam antibiotics.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, or stomach upset.
Less common side effects may include allergic reactions (skin rashes, itching, or swelling), liver problems (such as jaundice), or blood disorders (e.g., low blood counts).
If you experience severe side effects like difficulty breathing or swelling of the face or throat, seek immediate medical help.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Fimoxyclav 375 mg is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy, but it should only be used when the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Always consult a doctor before use.
Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid are excreted in breast milk, but in small amounts. It is generally considered safe for breastfeeding mothers, but should only be used under medical supervision.
Therapeutic Class:
Antibiotics, Penicillins with Beta-lactamase Inhibitors
