Fimoxyclav 1g is used to treat a broad range of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and infections caused by susceptible bacteria. The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid works together to inhibit bacterial growth and prevent resistance.
Pharmacology:
Fimoxyclav contains two active ingredients:
Amoxicillin: A beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to the death of the bacteria.
Clavulanic Acid: A beta-lactamase inhibitor that prevents certain bacteria from producing beta-lactamase enzymes, which would otherwise break down amoxicillin, thus enhancing its effectiveness against resistant bacterial strains.
Dosage:
Adults: The usual dose of Fimoxyclav 1g is 1 gram (equivalent to 1 vial) every 12 hours. The dosage may vary based on the severity of the infection and the doctor’s recommendation.
Children: Dosage depends on the child’s weight and the severity of the infection, usually calculated as 25–45 mg/kg body weight per day, divided into two doses.
Administration:
Fimoxyclav 1g is typically administered by intravenous (IV) infusion or injection in a healthcare setting.
The powder in the vial must be reconstituted with sterile water or saline before administration.
The medication should be infused slowly over a period of 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Interaction:
Fimoxyclav 1g may interact with blood thinners such as warfarin, other antibiotics, and certain antifungal drugs.
If you are taking any other medications, especially for infections or blood pressure, inform your doctor to avoid potential interactions.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, or any other components of Fimoxyclav.
History of severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Use with caution in patients with a history of liver disease or jaundice associated with the use of penicillin.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
Less common side effects include allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
Rare but serious side effects may include liver dysfunction, blood disorders (e.g., low blood cell counts), and severe gastrointestinal symptoms like colitis.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Fimoxyclav 1g is generally considered safe during pregnancy, but should only be used when necessary and prescribed by a doctor.
Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid are excreted in breast milk. It is generally considered safe for breastfeeding mothers, but should be used under medical supervision.
Therapeutic Class:
Antibiotics, Penicillins with Beta-lactamase Inhibitors
Storage Conditions:
