Fimoxyl 100 ml is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and infections caused by susceptible bacteria. The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid enhances the antibacterial effect, providing a broad spectrum of action against many pathogens.
Pharmacology:
Fimoxyl contains two active ingredients:
Amoxicillin: A broad-spectrum antibiotic from the penicillin class, which inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to the death of bacteria.
Clavulanic Acid: A beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects amoxicillin from being broken down by certain bacterial enzymes called beta-lactamases, thus improving the efficacy of amoxicillin against resistant bacteria.
Dosage:
Adults and Children (over 12 years): The usual dose of Fimoxyl 100 ml is 500 mg (equivalent to 5 ml of solution) every 12 hours. The dosage may be adjusted based on the severity of the infection.
Children (under 12 years): The dose for children is usually based on the child’s weight, typically 20–40 mg/kg body weight per day, divided into two doses.
Administration:
Fimoxyl 100 ml is typically administered intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM) by a healthcare professional.
Before administration, the solution should be prepared as directed by your healthcare provider.
The infusion or injection should be done slowly, taking approximately 30 minutes for the full infusion.
Interaction:
Fimoxyl 100 ml may interact with other antibiotics, anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), and drugs affecting liver enzymes.
It is important to inform your healthcare provider of all other medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
Contraindications:
Known hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, or other penicillin antibiotics.
Not recommended for patients with a history of severe allergic reactions to beta-lactam antibiotics.
Caution is required in patients with a history of liver disease or jaundice related to the use of penicillin.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach discomfort.
Less common side effects can include allergic reactions such as skin rashes, itching, or swelling.
Rare but severe side effects include liver dysfunction, blood disorders (e.g., low blood cell counts), and severe gastrointestinal disturbances like colitis.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Fimoxyl 100 ml is generally considered safe during pregnancy but should be used only when necessary and prescribed by a doctor.
Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid are excreted in breast milk, but the levels are generally considered safe. However, it is recommended to use the medication under medical supervision while breastfeeding.
Therapeutic Class:
Antibiotics, Penicillins with Beta-lactamase Inhibitors
Storage Conditions:
Store Fimoxyl 100 ml at room temperature (below 25°C), away from moisture and direct light.
Keep the solution out of reach of children.
Once reconstituted, the solution should be used within the time frame specified by the healthcare provider.
