Pharmacology:
Lantus contains insulin glargine, a synthetic long-acting insulin.
It works by promoting the absorption of glucose into the cells, thereby reducing blood sugar levels.
Insulin glargine has a slow, continuous release profile and is designed to provide basal insulin levels over an extended period, usually up to 24 hours.
Dosage:
The dose is typically individualized depending on the patient’s blood glucose levels and response to therapy.
Lantus is usually injected once a day, at the same time each day, either in the morning or evening.
The dosage may be adjusted based on the patient's needs and doctor's recommendations.
Administration:
Lantus Penfill comes in a pre-filled cartridge that can be used with compatible insulin pens.
It should be injected subcutaneously (under the skin) into the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm.
Before injecting, ensure the solution is clear and colorless. Do not use if the solution appears cloudy or contains particles.
Interaction:
Lantus may interact with other medications, such as oral hypoglycemics, corticosteroids, or diuretics.
Always inform your doctor of any other medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
Contraindications:
Lantus should not be used in individuals with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or who are allergic to insulin glargine or any of its components.
It should not be used for intravenous administration or in insulin pumps.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), weight gain, injection site reactions, and fluid retention.
Severe allergic reactions, though rare, can occur. Symptoms include rash, itching, and difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Lantus is generally considered safe during pregnancy but should be used under the supervision of a doctor.
It is excreted in breast milk, so breastfeeding mothers should consult their healthcare provider before using Lantus.
Therapeutic Class:
Insulin, Long-acting
Storage Conditions:

Once in use, Lantus can be stored at room temperature (up to 30°C) for up to 4 weeks.
