Flagyl 400 mg is used to treat infections caused by bacteria and protozoa. These include gastrointestinal infections (like giardiasis and amoebiasis), vaginal infections (like trichomoniasis), and certain skin infections. It is also used to treat infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, including infections in the abdomen, skin, and bones.
Pharmacology:
Flagyl 400 mg contains:
Metronidazole: The active ingredient, metronidazole, works by disrupting the DNA of bacteria and protozoa, preventing their growth and multiplication. It is effective against both anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, making it suitable for treating a wide range of infections.
Dosage:
Adults: The usual dose is 400 mg every 8–12 hours, depending on the type and severity of the infection. For some infections, the dose may be increased up to 1 gram per day.
Children: The dosage for children is calculated based on body weight and infection type. Always follow your doctor’s instructions for pediatric doses.
Administration:
Flagyl 400 mg tablets should be taken orally, with or without food.
Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Do not chew or crush the tablet.
For optimal results, take the medication at the same time each day, as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
Interaction:
Flagyl 400 mg may interact with alcohol, causing severe nausea and vomiting. Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after completing the medication.
It may also interact with other medications, including anticoagulants like warfarin and lithium. Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking.
Contraindications:
Flagyl 400 mg is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives.
It should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy unless the benefit outweighs the potential risk.
Caution is advised in patients with liver impairment, as metronidazole is metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, metallic taste in the mouth, diarrhea, or loss of appetite.
Less common but more serious side effects can include neurological symptoms such as seizures, numbness, or tingling in the hands or feet, or liver toxicity.
Seek medical attention immediately if you experience severe allergic reactions, such as swelling, difficulty breathing, or skin rashes.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Flagyl 400 mg is generally not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy. However, it may be prescribed in later stages of pregnancy if necessary. Always consult your doctor before use.
