Pharmacology:
Lantus SoloStar contains insulin glargine, a long-acting insulin that mimics the body’s natural insulin.
It works by allowing the body to absorb glucose from the bloodstream into cells, reducing blood sugar levels over an extended period (up to 24 hours).
The insulin is absorbed slowly, providing steady glucose control without peaks or valleys.
Dosage:
The usual dose is 1 injection per day, administered at the same time each day, either in the morning or evening, as directed by the doctor.
Dosage adjustments are made based on the individual’s blood glucose levels, lifestyle, and medical condition.
Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions for proper usage and dosage.
Administration:
Lantus SoloStar is a pre-filled insulin pen for subcutaneous injection.
It is injected under the skin (subcutaneously) into the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm.
The pen is easy to use and should be injected once daily at the same time.
Rotate injection sites to reduce the risk of irritation or skin reactions.
Interaction:
Lantus SoloStar may interact with other medications, including oral hypoglycemics, corticosteroids, and diuretics.
Always inform your doctor about any other medications, including over-the-counter and herbal products, to prevent potential interactions.
Alcohol can affect blood sugar levels and insulin action, so consult your doctor regarding alcohol consumption.
Contraindications:
Lantus SoloStar should not be used in people who are allergic to insulin glargine or any of the pen components.
It is contraindicated for patients with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or conditions that may lead to hypoglycemia.
Not suitable for intravenous use or insulin pumps.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include injection site reactions (pain, redness, swelling), low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), and weight gain.
Serious side effects, although rare, may include severe hypoglycemia or allergic reactions such as rash or difficulty breathing.
Contact a doctor immediately if you experience any severe or unusual side effects.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Lantus SoloStar is considered safe during pregnancy but should only be used under medical supervision.
Insulin is excreted in breast milk, so consult your doctor before using Lantus while breastfeeding.
