Indications:
Used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Also indicated to reduce risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Pharmacology:
Empagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that reduces renal glucose reabsorption, leading to increased glucose excretion and lower blood sugar.
Dosage & Administration:
Recommended starting dose is 10 mg once daily, with or without food. Dose may be increased to 25 mg based on clinical response and tolerance.
Interaction:
May increase diuretic effect, leading to volume depletion. Risk of hypoglycemia increases when combined with insulin or insulin secretagogues.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Empagliflozin. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Side Effects:
Common: urinary tract infections, increased urination, thirst. Rare: ketoacidosis, hypotension, genital infections.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless clearly necessary.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor renal function. Caution in patients with hypotension, volume depletion, or elderly. Discontinue if ketoacidosis is suspected.
