Indications:
Empamet 12.5/850mg is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycemic control when diet, exercise, and monotherapy with metformin are insufficient.
Pharmacology:
This combination contains empagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor which promotes urinary glucose excretion, and metformin, which reduces hepatic glucose production and increases insulin sensitivity, providing synergistic blood glucose lowering effects.
Dosage:
Usually prescribed as one tablet twice daily with meals. Dose adjustments depend on clinical response and tolerance.
Administration:
Take orally with food to minimize gastrointestinal side effects. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Interaction:
May interact with insulin, sulfonylureas, diuretics, and other drugs affecting kidney function. Monitor for increased risk of hypoglycemia.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73m²), metabolic acidosis, or allergy to either component.
Side Effects:
Possible side effects include nausea, diarrhea, urinary tract infections, increased urination, and risk of hypoglycemia when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation unless benefits outweigh risks.
Precautions & Warnings:
Regularly monitor renal function and hydration status. Use with caution in elderly or dehydrated patients.
