Indications:
Empamet XR 10/1000mg is indicated for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycemic control when diet, exercise, and monotherapy are insufficient.
Pharmacology:
This extended-release tablet combines empagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor that promotes urinary glucose excretion, and metformin, which decreases hepatic glucose production and enhances insulin sensitivity, providing sustained blood glucose control.
Dosage:
Typically prescribed as one tablet once daily with the evening meal. Dose adjustments depend on patient response and tolerance.
Administration:
Take orally with food to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Do not crush or chew the tablet; swallow whole.
Interaction:
May interact with insulin, sulfonylureas, diuretics, and medications affecting kidney function. Monitor for hypoglycemia.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73m²), metabolic acidosis, or hypersensitivity to components.
Side Effects:
Side effects include gastrointestinal discomfort, urinary tract infections, increased urination, and hypoglycemia risk when combined with other antidiabetics.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Not recommended unless benefits outweigh risks during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
