Indications:
Empamet XR 5/1000mg is indicated for improving glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus inadequately controlled by diet, exercise, and monotherapy.
Pharmacology:
This extended-release tablet combines empagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor that promotes urinary glucose excretion, and metformin, which reduces hepatic glucose production and increases insulin sensitivity, providing sustained glucose lowering.
Dosage:
Usually prescribed as one tablet once daily with the evening meal. Dose may be adjusted according to patient response and tolerance.
Administration:
Take orally with food to minimize gastrointestinal side effects. Swallow the tablet whole without crushing or chewing.
Interaction:
May interact with other antidiabetic drugs, diuretics, and medications affecting kidney function. Monitor blood glucose closely.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73m²), metabolic acidosis, and hypersensitivity.
Side Effects:
Side effects include gastrointestinal upset, urinary tract infections, increased urination, and possible hypoglycemia when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas.
