Indications:
Empamet 5/1000mg is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycemic control in patients inadequately controlled with metformin alone.
Pharmacology:
This medication combines empagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor that promotes glucose excretion via urine, with metformin, which decreases hepatic glucose production and increases peripheral insulin sensitivity, resulting in improved blood glucose control.
Dosage:
Usually prescribed as one tablet twice daily with meals. Dosage may be adjusted based on therapeutic response and patient tolerance.
Administration:
Take orally with food to reduce gastrointestinal discomfort. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Interaction:
May interact with insulin, sulfonylureas, diuretics, and drugs affecting kidney function. Monitoring for hypoglycemia is advised.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73m²), metabolic acidosis, or hypersensitivity to components.
Side Effects:
Possible side effects include gastrointestinal upset, urinary tract infections, increased urination, and hypoglycemia especially when used with insulin or sulfonylureas.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless benefits outweigh risks.
Precautions & Warnings:
Regular monitoring of renal function is necessary. Use caution in elderly or volume-depleted patients.
