Indications:
LIJENTA M 850 mg is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when treatment with both Linagliptin and Metformin is appropriate.
Pharmacology:
Linagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor that increases incretin levels, which in turn increases insulin release and decreases glucagon levels in the circulation. Metformin decreases hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity.
Dosage & Administration:
The usual dosage is one tablet twice daily with meals, or as directed by a physician. Dosage may be adjusted based on the patient’s response and tolerance.
Interaction:
May interact with insulin or insulin secretagogues (increased risk of hypoglycemia), diuretics, corticosteroids, and contrast agents. Monitor renal function and blood glucose closely.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients, renal impairment, metabolic acidosis (including diabetic ketoacidosis), or acute/chronic diseases that may cause tissue hypoxia.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include gastrointestinal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, headache, and hypoglycemia when used with other antidiabetics. Rarely, lactic acidosis may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Caution is advised during lactation as both components may be excreted in human milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor renal function regularly. Caution in patients with liver disease, heart failure, or history of pancreatitis. Avoid excessive alcohol intake.
