Indications:
Empamet 5/500mg is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, especially in patients inadequately controlled on metformin alone. It improves glycemic control when combined with diet and exercise.
Pharmacology:
Empamet combines empagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor that increases glucose excretion via urine, with metformin, which reduces liver glucose production and improves insulin sensitivity, thus lowering blood glucose effectively.
Dosage:
Typically, one tablet twice daily with meals. Dosage adjustments depend on therapeutic response and patient tolerance.
Administration:
Orally with food to minimize gastrointestinal side effects. Swallow whole with water.
Interaction:
May interact with insulin, sulfonylureas, diuretics, and drugs affecting renal function. Monitor for increased risk of hypoglycemia.
Contraindications:
Not suitable for type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73m²), metabolic acidosis, or known hypersensitivity.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include gastrointestinal discomfort, urinary tract infections, increased urination, and hypoglycemia risk when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation unless benefits outweigh risks.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor renal function regularly. Use caution in elderly and dehydrated patients.
