Indications:
Lijenta M 1000 mg is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when diet, exercise, and monotherapy do not provide adequate glycemic control. It combines two medications—Linagliptin and Metformin—for improved effectiveness.
Pharmacology:
This combination tablet contains:

Linagliptin, a DPP-4 inhibitor that increases incretin levels to enhance insulin release and reduce glucagon levels after meals.

Metformin, a biguanide that decreases glucose production in the liver and increases insulin sensitivity.
Together, they lower blood glucose levels more effectively than either alone.
Dosage:
Usually taken once or twice daily with meals, depending on blood glucose levels and medical advice. Dosage must be personalized by a physician.
Administration:
Take with meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush or chew.
Interaction:
Alcohol intake, iodinated contrast agents, and some drugs like corticosteroids or beta-blockers may interfere with blood sugar control. Combining with insulin or sulfonylureas may increase hypoglycemia risk.

Side Effects:

Common: Nausea, diarrhea, flatulence, and abdominal discomfort (mainly due to Metformin)

Others: Hypoglycemia (when combined with insulin), headache, upper respiratory infections, or rarely, lactic acidosis (serious)
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly necessary. Caution is advised during lactation as Metformin passes into breast milk.

Stop medication temporarily before major surgery or radiological procedures involving contrast dye.
