Indications:
Lijenta 5 mg is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It may be used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medications.
Pharmacology:
Lijenta contains Linagliptin, a DPP-4 inhibitor that works by increasing the levels of incretin hormones. These hormones increase insulin release and decrease glucagon levels, thus helping to lower blood glucose.
Dosage:
The recommended dose is 5 mg once daily, with or without food. No dose adjustment is needed for patients with kidney or liver impairment.
Administration:
Can be taken at any time of day, with or without meals. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Interaction:
Co-administration with insulin or sulfonylureas may increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Rifampin may reduce the effectiveness of Linagliptin.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Linagliptin or any of the excipients.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include nasopharyngitis, headache, cough, and hypoglycemia (when used with insulin or sulfonylureas). Rarely, it may cause pancreatitis or joint pain.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is not known whether Linagliptin is excreted in human milk; caution is advised during lactation.
Precautions & Warnings:
Not for use in type 1 diabetes or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis. Monitor blood sugar levels regularly. Discontinue if signs of pancreatitis appear.
Therapeutic Class:
Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 (DPP-4) Inhibitors
Storage Conditions:
Store at or below 30°C in a cool, dry place. Keep away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
