Indications:
LOSARVA 50 MG is indicated for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy, and to provide renal protection in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with proteinuria.
Pharmacology:
Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist (ARB) that selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor, preventing vasoconstriction and aldosterone secretion. This leads to decreased blood pressure and improved cardiovascular outcomes.
Dosage & Administration:
The usual starting dose is 50 mg once daily. The dose may be increased to a maximum of 100 mg daily in one or two divided doses based on blood pressure response. Dose adjustment may be needed in patients with liver or kidney impairment.
Interaction:
Losartan may interact with NSAIDs, potassium supplements, potassium-sparing diuretics, lithium, and other antihypertensives. Use with caution and monitor serum electrolytes and renal function.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to losartan or any component of the product. Not to be used during pregnancy due to risk of fetal harm.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include dizziness, fatigue, upper respiratory infections, nasal congestion, and back pain. Rare but serious side effects include hyperkalemia and renal dysfunction.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Losartan is contraindicated in pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters. Use during breastfeeding is not recommended unless clearly needed.
Precautions & Warnings:
Regular monitoring of blood pressure and renal function is advised. Use caution in patients with volume depletion, renal artery stenosis, or hepatic impairment.
