Indications:
Empamet 5/850mg is indicated for managing type 2 diabetes mellitus, especially in patients who do not achieve adequate glycemic control with metformin alone.
Pharmacology:
This drug combines empagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor that increases glucose excretion via urine, and metformin, which decreases hepatic glucose production and improves insulin sensitivity, thereby effectively reducing blood glucose levels.
Dosage:
Recommended dose is usually one tablet twice daily with meals. Dose adjustments depend on patient response and tolerance.
Administration:
Take orally with food to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Interaction:
May interact with insulin, sulfonylureas, diuretics, and other drugs affecting kidney function. Increased risk of hypoglycemia may occur.
Contraindications:
Not recommended for patients with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73m²), or hypersensitivity to components.
Side Effects:
Side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, urinary tract infections, increased urination, and risk of hypoglycemia when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use during pregnancy and lactation only if potential benefits outweigh risks.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor renal function regularly. Use caution in elderly, dehydrated, or volume-depleted patients.
