Pharmacology:
Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, resulting in cell lysis and death. It is effective against a broad range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Dosage:
Typical adult and pediatric dose is 100–200 mg daily in one or two divided doses. Dosage may vary based on severity and type of infection.
Administration:
Oral administration, with or without food. Should be taken at the same time each day to ensure consistent blood levels.
Interaction:
May interact with anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) and may affect prothrombin time. Should not be used concurrently with strong antacids which may reduce absorption.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Cefixime or other cephalosporins. Caution in patients with penicillin allergy due to possible cross-reactivity.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and rash. Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions or hepatic enzyme elevation may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation. Animal studies show no fetal harm, but human studies are limited.

Third Generation Cephalosporins
