Indications:
LOSARVA PLUS 50/12.5 MG is indicated for the treatment of hypertension in patients for whom combination therapy is appropriate. It is used when monotherapy with Losartan or Hydrochlorothiazide is insufficient.
Pharmacology:
This fixed-dose combination includes:
Losartan: An angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that lowers blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels.
Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ): A thiazide diuretic that helps prevent the body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention, thus reducing blood pressure.
Dosage & Administration:
The usual dose is one tablet once daily. The dosage may be adjusted based on clinical response. It can be administered with or without food. Ensure adequate hydration to avoid electrolyte imbalance.
Interaction:
May interact with lithium, potassium supplements, potassium-sparing diuretics, NSAIDs, other antihypertensives, alcohol, and diabetes medications. Monitor blood pressure, electrolytes, and renal function closely.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any component, anuria, severe renal or hepatic impairment, and in pregnant women. Also contraindicated in patients with sulfonamide allergy (HCTZ is a sulfonamide derivative).
Side Effects:
Common side effects include dizziness, fatigue, low blood pressure, increased urination, and electrolyte imbalance (especially hypokalemia). Rarely, it may cause hyperuricemia, gout, or photosensitivity.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Contraindicated in pregnancy due to fetal toxicity risk. Use with caution during lactation, as components may be excreted in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor serum electrolytes, particularly potassium and sodium. Caution in patients with a history of gout, diabetes, electrolyte imbalances, or kidney/liver disease.
Therapeutic Class:
Combination antihypertensive agents – ARB with Diuretic
Storage Conditions:
Store below 30°C, in a dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
