Azithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing bacterial growth and replication.
Pediatric dose varies; typically 10 mg/kg once daily for 3 days or as prescribed
Take with or without food
Complete full course to prevent resistance
May interact with antacids reducing absorption
Caution with other QT-prolonging drugs
Possible interactions with warfarin and cyclosporine
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin or other macrolides
History of liver dysfunction related to macrolides
Caution in patients with QT prolongation
Common: Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain
Less common: Vomiting, headache
Rare: Allergic reactions, liver enzyme elevation
Pregnancy: Generally safe but use only if clearly needed
Lactation: Small amounts excreted in breast milk; use caution
Monitor for allergic reactions
Use cautiously in patients with liver or heart problems
Report any irregular heartbeat promptly
