Clarithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing bacterial growth.
Adults: 250–500 mg every 12 hours or as prescribed
Can be taken with or without food
Complete full course to avoid resistance
May interact with drugs like statins, warfarin, and certain benzodiazepines
Caution with other QT-prolonging agents
Possible increased effects of theophylline and carbamazepine
Hypersensitivity to clarithromycin or other macrolides
History of QT prolongation or cardiac arrhythmias
Severe hepatic or renal impairment (dose adjustment needed)
Common: Nausea, diarrhea, altered taste, headache
Less common: Vomiting, abdominal pain
Rare: QT prolongation, liver enzyme elevation, allergic reactions
Pregnancy: Use only if clearly needed
Lactation: Use with caution; small amounts pass into breast milk
Monitor liver function in prolonged use
Use cautiously in patients with heart conditions
Report any irregular heartbeat or allergic reactions immediately
