Treatment of essential hypertension
Suitable for patients requiring combination therapy for blood pressure control
May be prescribed alone or with other antihypertensive agents
Exforge combines two agents:
Amlodipine: A calcium channel blocker that dilates blood vessels and reduces vascular resistance.
Valsartan: An angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that inhibits vasoconstriction and lowers blood pressure.
Their combined action helps achieve effective and sustained blood pressure control.
Usually one tablet once daily, with or without food
Dose adjustment based on therapeutic response and tolerability
Not recommended in severe hepatic or renal impairment without specialist advice
Increased risk of hypotension with other antihypertensives
Potential hyperkalemia with potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics
Caution with NSAIDs, lithium, and other nephrotoxic drugs
Avoid combination with ACE inhibitors due to risk of renal impairment
Hypersensitivity to amlodipine, valsartan, or excipients
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Severe liver dysfunction or biliary obstruction
Severe renal impairment without monitoring
Common: Edema, dizziness, headache, fatigue
Less common: Palpitations, flushing, abdominal discomfort
Rare: Angioedema, hypotension, elevated liver enzymes
Pregnancy: Contraindicated; may cause fetal harm
Lactation: Not recommended
Regular monitoring of blood pressure, renal and liver function advised
Use cautiously in patients with heart failure or volume depletion
Avoid abrupt discontinuation; taper doses if necessary
