Treatment of anaerobic bacterial infections
Treatment of protozoal infections such as amoebiasis and trichomoniasis
Used for infections of the gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary tract, skin, and respiratory tract
Metronidazole is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent. It enters microbial cells and causes DNA strand breakage, inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis, resulting in cell death of anaerobic bacteria and protozoa.
Typical adult dose: 500 mg orally every 8-12 hours depending on infection severity
Duration depends on infection type and response to therapy
Should be taken with food to minimize gastrointestinal upset
Alcohol consumption must be avoided during therapy and for 48 hours after due to disulfiram-like reaction
May increase effects of warfarin and lithium
Possible interaction with phenytoin, phenobarbital, and cyclosporine
Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or related compounds
First trimester of pregnancy (use only if clearly necessary)
Use caution in patients with severe liver impairment
Common: Nausea, metallic taste, headache, dizziness
Less common: Abdominal cramps, diarrhea, rash
Rare: Neurotoxicity (peripheral neuropathy), seizures
Pregnancy: Avoid in the first trimester unless benefit outweighs risk
Lactation: Use with caution as metronidazole passes into breast milk
Avoid alcohol during and 48 hours post-treatment
Monitor neurological symptoms during prolonged use
Use with caution in patients with liver dysfunction
Antibiotic / Antiprotozoal
