Treatment of anaerobic bacterial infections
Treatment of protozoal infections such as amoebiasis, giardiasis, and trichomoniasis
Effective against infections of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, skin, and respiratory systems
Metronidazole disrupts DNA synthesis in susceptible anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, leading to microbial cell death.
Typical dose: 250 mg orally every 8-12 hours depending on infection severity
Take with food to reduce gastrointestinal side effects
Duration varies according to infection and response
Alcohol should be avoided during treatment and 48 hours after
May potentiate effects of warfarin and lithium
Possible interactions with phenytoin and phenobarbital
Known hypersensitivity to metronidazole
Use cautiously in the first trimester of pregnancy
Severe hepatic impairment requires careful monitoring
Common: Nausea, metallic taste, headache, dizziness
Less common: Diarrhea, abdominal pain, rash
Rare: Peripheral neuropathy, seizures
Pregnancy: Avoid unless clearly necessary
Lactation: Use cautiously; metronidazole passes into breast milk
Avoid alcohol to prevent disulfiram-like reactions
Monitor neurological symptoms in prolonged use
Use cautiously in liver disease
