Indications:
Barif is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, either alone or in combination with other antihypertensives. It helps reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, and kidney disease related to high blood pressure.
Pharmacology:
Olmesartan Medoxomil is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor in vascular smooth muscle, preventing vasoconstriction and lowering blood pressure.
Dosage & Administration:
The usual recommended dose is 20 mg once daily. Depending on the patient's response, the dose may be increased to 40 mg daily. Can be taken with or without food.
Interaction:
May interact with NSAIDs, potassium supplements, diuretics, lithium, and other antihypertensive drugs. Combination with aliskiren in diabetic patients is not recommended.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Olmesartan. Also contraindicated in pregnancy and in patients with biliary obstruction or severe hepatic impairment.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include dizziness, fatigue, headache, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Rarely, kidney dysfunction and hyperkalemia may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Contraindicated during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters. Not recommended during lactation without physician’s advice.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor blood pressure and kidney function regularly. Use with caution in patients with renal artery stenosis or severe renal impairment.
