Indications:
SEDIL is indicated for the management of anxiety disorders, muscle spasms, convulsive disorders, status epilepticus, and for the symptomatic relief of acute alcohol withdrawal.
Pharmacology:
Diazepam is a long-acting benzodiazepine that enhances the inhibitory effects of GABA in the central nervous system, producing anxiolytic, sedative, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant properties.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults: 2–10 mg orally, 2 to 4 times daily depending on the condition.
Dosage should be individualized.
Should be taken with water; food may reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.
Interaction:
May potentiate effects of alcohol, barbiturates, opioids, antidepressants, and other CNS depressants. Use with caution in combination with these agents.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Diazepam or other benzodiazepines
Myasthenia gravis
Severe respiratory insufficiency
Sleep apnea syndrome
Severe hepatic insufficiency
Side Effects:
Drowsiness, sedation, fatigue, muscle weakness, ataxia. Long-term use may lead to dependence, tolerance, or withdrawal symptoms upon discontinuation.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential teratogenic effects. Diazepam can pass into breast milk; breastfeeding should be avoided.
Precautions & Warnings:
Prolonged use may cause dependence. Should not be discontinued abruptly. Use with caution in elderly, debilitated patients, and those with renal/hepatic impairment.
