Indications:
Rosuva is indicated for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia, mixed dyslipidemia, and for reducing the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with elevated cholesterol.
Pharmacology:
Rosuvastatin is a selective and competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme responsible for the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a precursor of cholesterol. It increases LDL receptor expression and promotes LDL clearance from the blood.
Dosage & Administration:
The usual starting dose is 10 mg once daily, with or without food. Dose adjustments may be made based on lipid levels and patient response.
Interaction:
May interact with cyclosporine, warfarin, antacids, and fibrates. Caution with drugs that increase the risk of myopathy or rhabdomyolysis.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with active liver disease, unexplained persistent elevations in liver enzymes, and during pregnancy and lactation.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include headache, muscle pain, abdominal pain, and nausea. Rarely, serious muscle problems and liver dysfunction may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation. Rosuvastatin may cause harm to the fetus or infant.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor liver function tests and creatine kinase levels if symptoms suggest myopathy. Advise patients to report unexplained muscle pain or weakness.
