Indications:
Thyrin is indicated for the treatment of primary, secondary, and tertiary hypothyroidism, goiter, and as suppressive therapy in thyroid cancer.
Pharmacology:
Thyrin contains Levothyroxine sodium, a synthetic form of thyroxine (T4), which is converted to triiodothyronine (T3) in the body. It acts by regulating growth, development, and metabolism through its role in gene expression.
Dosage & Administration:
Usual initial dose: 25–50 mcg once daily, adjusted by physician based on TSH levels.
Best taken on an empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast.
Dose may vary for elderly or cardiac patients.
Interaction:
May interact with antacids, iron, calcium supplements, warfarin, and insulin. Spacing of doses with other medications is advised.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to levothyroxine, untreated adrenal insufficiency, acute myocardial infarction, and thyrotoxicosis.
Side Effects:
Overdose can cause symptoms of hyperthyroidism: palpitations, weight loss, insomnia, and nervousness. Rarely, allergic skin reactions.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Safe in pregnancy; dose adjustment may be necessary. Small amounts may be excreted in breast milk but generally considered safe.
Precautions & Warnings:
Regular monitoring of TSH and T4 levels is essential. Use caution in patients with cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
