Indications:
Nidipine SR is indicated for the management of hypertension (high blood pressure), chronic stable angina, and vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal’s angina).
Pharmacology:
Nifedipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker. It inhibits the influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle, leading to relaxation of the blood vessels, reduced peripheral resistance, and lowered blood pressure. It also improves oxygen supply to the heart in angina.
Dosage:
Adults: 1 tablet (20 mg) once or twice daily depending on the patient’s condition and physician’s advice.
Dosage must be individualized.
Administration:
Should be taken orally with or without food. The tablet must be swallowed whole, not chewed or crushed.
Interaction:
May interact with beta-blockers, digoxin, quinidine, and grapefruit juice. Monitor blood pressure when used with other antihypertensive drugs.
Contraindications:
Known hypersensitivity to Nifedipine, cardiogenic shock, significant aortic stenosis, unstable angina, or recent myocardial infarction.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include headache, flushing, dizziness, edema (especially of ankles), fatigue, and nausea. Rarely, hypotension or palpitations may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a physician during pregnancy. Caution is advised in lactating mothers as the drug may pass into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use with caution in patients with liver impairment, heart failure, or low blood pressure. Do not discontinue abruptly. Regular monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.
