Indications:
Nexum MUPS is indicated for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, NSAID-associated gastric ulcers, and as part of H. pylori eradication therapy.
Pharmacology:
Nexum MUPS contains Esomeprazole magnesium, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that selectively inhibits the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in gastric parietal cells, leading to decreased gastric acid secretion and promoting healing.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults: 20 mg once daily, preferably before breakfast, for 4 to 8 weeks depending on condition.
Tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed.
May be used longer for maintenance therapy as advised by physician.
Interaction:
May interact with clopidogrel, ketoconazole, warfarin, diazepam, and phenytoin. Monitor for altered drug effects.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Esomeprazole or other PPIs
Severe hepatic impairment (use with caution)
Side Effects:
Common: Headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence.
Rare: Vitamin B12 deficiency (long-term use), hypomagnesemia, increased fracture risk.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Category B. Generally safe but use only if clearly needed. Consult doctor during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Evaluate for gastric malignancy before prolonged use.
Monitor magnesium and vitamin B12 during long-term therapy.
Avoid abrupt discontinuation.
