Indications:
Carbizol is indicated for:
Epilepsy (partial and generalized tonic-clonic seizures)
Trigeminal neuralgia and other neuropathic pain conditions
Bipolar disorder as a mood stabilizer
Pharmacology:
Carbamazepine stabilizes hyperactive nerve membranes by blocking sodium channels, reducing repetitive neuronal firing and controlling seizures and neuropathic pain.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults: Initial dose usually 100 mg twice daily, gradually increased based on response.
Take with food to minimize gastrointestinal upset.
Regular monitoring of blood levels is recommended.
Interaction:
Induces hepatic enzymes; may reduce effectiveness of other drugs.
Interacts with oral contraceptives, warfarin, and other anticonvulsants.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to carbamazepine or tricyclic compounds
History of bone marrow suppression
Severe hepatic or renal impairment
Side Effects:
Dizziness, drowsiness, nausea
Rash, allergic reactions
Rare but serious: aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed; potential risk to fetus. Consult doctor before breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor blood counts and liver function regularly
Use cautiously in patients with cardiac or hepatic disease
Avoid abrupt discontinuation to prevent seizures
