Indications:
SECRIN 2 MG is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, when diet, exercise, and weight reduction alone are not adequate.
Pharmacology:
Glimepiride is a second-generation sulfonylurea that stimulates insulin release from pancreatic beta cells. It also increases the sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin and reduces hepatic glucose production.
Dosage & Administration:
Usual starting dose is 1 to 2 mg once daily with breakfast or the first main meal.
Dose may be adjusted based on blood glucose response up to a maximum of 8 mg per day.
Titration should occur at 1 to 2 week intervals based on blood glucose monitoring.
Do not skip meals after taking the medication.
Interaction:
Increased hypoglycemic effect with NSAIDs, insulin, other antidiabetics, ACE inhibitors, and alcohol.
Reduced effect with corticosteroids, thiazides, and sympathomimetics.
Beta-blockers may mask symptoms of hypoglycemia.
