Indications:
Glysup is indicated for the relief of occasional constipation and to evacuate the bowel before rectal examinations or surgery. It is especially useful in pediatric patients and those who cannot take oral laxatives.
Pharmacology:
Glycerin is a hyperosmotic laxative. When administered rectally, it draws water into the colon, which softens the stool and stimulates bowel movement through mild local irritation of the mucosa. Its action typically begins within 15 to 60 minutes of administration.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults and children over 6 years: 1 suppository per day as needed.
Children (2 to 6 years): Half to 1 suppository per day, preferably in the morning.
Insert rectally and retain for 15–30 minutes if possible for best results. For rectal use only.
Interaction:
No significant drug interactions reported due to its local effect and minimal systemic absorption. However, consult a physician if used with other laxatives or stool softeners.
Contraindications:
Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to glycerin or in case of rectal bleeding, appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, or acute abdominal pain.
Side Effects:
Generally well tolerated. Rare side effects include rectal irritation, burning sensation, and abdominal cramps.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Considered safe during pregnancy and lactation when used occasionally and under medical supervision.
Precautions & Warnings:
Do not use regularly for more than 7 days unless directed by a physician. Prolonged or excessive use may lead to dependence or electrolyte imbalance. Use gently to avoid rectal trauma, especially in children.
Therapeutic Class:
Laxatives (Rectal); Hyperosmotic agents
Storage Conditions:
Store below 25°C. Protect from excessive heat and light. Keep out of reach of children.
