Indications:
Cerevas is indicated for the treatment of vertigo, motion sickness, nausea, vomiting, and balance disorders such as Ménière’s disease. It is also used in cerebral vascular disorders and peripheral circulation problems.
Pharmacology:
Cinnarizine is an antihistaminic (H1 receptor blocker) with calcium channel blocking activity. It acts as a vestibular suppressant by reducing the excitability of the labyrinthine system and decreasing abnormal stimulation in the inner ear. It also improves microcirculation by inhibiting smooth muscle contraction in the vascular walls.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults: 1–2 tablets (5–10 mg) two to three times daily depending on severity.
For motion sickness: Take 30 minutes before travel.
Children (over 5 years): Half the adult dose or as directed by a physician.
Should be taken after meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
Interaction:
May enhance the effects of CNS depressants like alcohol, sedatives, and tranquilizers. Caution when combined with antihypertensives or anticholinergic drugs.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cinnarizine or any of its components. Not recommended in patients with Parkinson’s disease due to dopamine antagonistic activity.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include drowsiness, weight gain, dry mouth, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Prolonged use may cause extrapyramidal symptoms in elderly patients.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Should be used during pregnancy or lactation only if clearly necessary and prescribed by a physician.
Precautions & Warnings:
May impair mental and physical ability; caution is advised while driving or operating machinery. Long-term use should be avoided in elderly patients unless clearly indicated.
