Indications:
VIRUX 400 mg Tablet is indicated for the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections of the skin and mucous membranes, including initial and recurrent genital herpes. It is also indicated for the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles) and varicella (chickenpox).

Pharmacology:
Acyclovir is a synthetic purine nucleoside analogue with inhibitory activity against herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, varicella-zoster virus, and Epstein-Barr virus. It acts by inhibiting viral DNA synthesis after phosphorylation by viral thymidine kinase.

Dosage:

Genital herpes: 400 mg three times daily for 7–10 days (initial episode)
Recurrent herpes: 400 mg twice daily for 5 days
Herpes zoster: 800 mg five times daily for 7–10 days
Dosage may vary based on condition and physician’s advice.

Administration:
Should be taken orally with a full glass of water. May be taken with or without food. Adequate hydration is advised during treatment.

Interaction:
May interact with other nephrotoxic agents (e.g., cyclosporine). Probenecid can reduce Acyclovir clearance and increase plasma concentration. Minimal interaction with other drugs.

Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Acyclovir or any of its components.

Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, headache, and abdominal pain. Rare but serious side effects include renal impairment, neurotoxicity, and hypersensitivity reactions.

Pregnancy & Lactation:
Category B in pregnancy: no adequate studies in pregnant women, but animal studies show no harm. Should be used during pregnancy or lactation only if clearly needed and under physician supervision.

Precautions & Warnings:
Use with caution in patients with renal impairment. Ensure adequate fluid intake. Monitor renal function if used for long-term or high-dose therapy. Not a cure for herpes but helps reduce symptoms and frequency of outbreaks.
