Backtone 5 mg Tablet contains Baclofen, a centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant manufactured by Pharmacil Limited in Bangladesh. It is primarily used to manage muscle spasticity associated with conditions such as multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, cerebrovascular accidents, and cerebral palsy. Baclofen functions by stimulating GABA-B receptors in the spinal cord, inhibiting the release of excitatory neurotransmitters like glutamate and aspartate, thereby reducing muscle tone and spasms. This action helps alleviate symptoms such as muscle rigidity, clonus, and flexor spasms, improving mobility and facilitating rehabilitation.
The typical adult dosage of Backtone 5 mg Tablet starts at 5 mg three times daily, preferably taken with or after food, gradually increasing to a maximum of 100 mg per day, depending on patient response and tolerance. For children over 10 years, the dosage is adjusted based on body weight, starting at 0.3 mg/kg per day and increasing as needed.
Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, nausea, and fatigue. Serious adverse effects are less common but may include confusion, hallucinations, seizures, and respiratory depression. Caution is advised when using Baclofen in patients with renal impairment, hepatic disorders, or cardiovascular conditions, as dosage adjustments may be necessary. Abrupt discontinuation should be avoided due to the risk of withdrawal symptoms; dosage should be reduced gradually over at least 1 to 2 weeks.
