Description
Gavirad is an over-the-counter antacid formulation manufactured by Radiant Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in Bangladesh. Each 10 ml of the 200 ml oral suspension contains 500 mg of Sodium Alginate, 267 mg of Sodium Bicarbonate, and 160 mg of Calcium Carbonate. This combination works through a physical mechanism rather than systemic absorption. Upon ingestion, the components react with gastric acid to form a gel-like raft of alginic acid with a near-neutral pH. This raft floats on the stomach contents, effectively preventing gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) for up to 4 hours. In severe cases, the raft may be refluxed into the esophagus, providing a soothing effect without the discomfort of stomach acid. Gavirad is commonly used to relieve symptoms associated with gastric reflux, heartburn, indigestion, flatulence related to gastric reflux, and heartburn during pregnancy. It is also indicated for epigastric and retrosternal discomfort where the underlying cause is gastric reflux. The product is available in a 200 ml bottle and is typically taken after meals and at bedtime. While generally considered safe, it is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients.
